  • QLD

http://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Licensing/Visitors-and-new-...rnational-drivers.aspx

Can I drive in Queensland under my valid foreign driver licence?

When driving on a road in Queensland under your valid foreign driver licence you must:

  • only drive the class of motor vehicle authorised on that licence
  • comply with the conditions (if any) of your licence
  • show your licence to a police officer when asked to do so.
If your licence is in a language other than English, you should carry a recognised English translation of it when driving. This translation should be shown to the police officer at the same time you are required to show your licence. For a list of approved recognised translators, contact the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters Ltd (NAATI).

Getting a Queensland licence (for overseas licence holders)

You will need to pass a written road rules test and a practical driving test if you are applying for a Queensland heavy vehicle driver licence (class LR, MR, HR, HC or MC).

  • NT

Can I use my Interstate/Overseas Driver Licence to drive in the Northern Territory?
Yes – you may use your Interstate/Overseas Driver Licence providing that you have not been in the Northern Territory for a continuous period of three (3) months.

An overseas visitor is permitted to drive in the NT using his/her current overseas licence, together with an overseas issued International Driving Permit granted in accordance with the terms of the 1949 United Nations Convention on Road Traffic, (if the licence is in any language other than English). After three (3) months, the driver licence is invalid. To continue to drive in the NT after this initial three (3) month period, you must be issued a Northern Territory driver licence (in certain circumstances an Exemption from holding an NT driver licence may be granted).

Transfers will be to base grade classes only, i.e. class “C” (car) and class “R” (Rider-motorcycle). Unless the overseas licence has been held for the relevant period, a Provisional licence will be issued. The relevant period for a person less than 25 years of age is 2 years. For applicants aged 25 and over the relevant period is 1 year.
New Zealand licence transfers are not restricted to base grades; however applications for the transfer of heavy vehicle classes will be assessed on a case by case basis.

  • WA

Using your overseas driver's licence in Western Australia

If you are a visitor to Western Australia (WA), you may drive only those vehicles that you are authorised to drive on your overseas licence, for as long as it remains valid in the country of issue. If your overseas licence ceases to be valid, you must apply for a WA licence if you wish to continue driving.
If you hold a permanent resident visa, you can drive on your overseas licence until you have resided in WA for 3 months. After this time you will need to apply for a WA driver’s licence.
To be able to drive on WA roads with your overseas driver's licence (and International Driving Permit, if applicable), you must:
  • Carry your licence (and International Driving Permit, if applicable) with you at all times while driving and show it to a police officer if asked to do so.
  • Comply with any other conditions of your licence.
  • Drive only those vehicles that you are authorised to drive.
  • Hold a current licence that is not suspended or cancelled (you cannot drive on your overseas licence if you are disqualified from driving or your driving privileges are withdrawn).
If your overseas licence is not in English, you must carry an International Driving Permit or an approved English translation of your licence (if you have either of these) with you when you drive.

  • NSW

Types of vehicles that can be driven

If you are a visiting car licence holder you may drive vehicles of the kind covered by a NSW class C driver licence (up to 4.5 tonnes GVM and seating up to 12 adults, including the driver). For more information about the requirements for driving in NSW see the Road Users' Handbook.
If you are a visiting motorcycle licence holder you may ride vehicles covered by the overseas licence class. For more information about the requirements for riding motorcycles in NSW see the Motorcycle Riders' Handbook.
If you are a visiting heavy vehicle licence holder you may drive vehicles that are authorised by your overseas licence class. For more information about the requirements for driving heavy vehicles in NSW see the Heavy Vehicle Drivers' Handbook.

Licensing arrangements for temporary overseas visitors
From 18 April 2008, all new NSW licence applicants identified as temporary overseas visitors will be subject to the following licensing rules:
  • As a temporary overseas visitor, you will only be eligible to apply for a NSW licence once you have been in Australia for a continuous period of at least six months immediately prior to licence application.

  • VIC

The requirement to change your overseas driver licence to a Victorian driver licence depends on whether your stay in Victoria is temporary or permanent.
If you are in Victoria on a temporary visa, you can drive on your overseas driver licence for as long as it is current providing it is in English or accompanied by an English translation or International Driving Permit. There is no requirement to get a Victorian driver licence.

Important: If your overseas licence (excluding New Zealand) includes a heavy vehicle category (eg. truck or bus licence), you must still complete a full heavy vehicle licence test to convert it to the equivalent heavy vehicle category in Victoria. See About heavy vehicle licences

To be able to be tested to convert your overseas heavy vehicle category over to a Victorian equivalent, you must first apply for an exemption from VicRoads. This exemption will allow you to apply to be tested to convert your overseas heavy vehicle licence to the Victorian equivalent immediately. If you do not apply for the exemption you will have to wait at least 12 months before you can be tested. To apply for the exemption, you must provide a letter with supporting evidence showing how long you have held that heavy vehicle category overseas and a copy of your overseas licence. If the licence is not in English, you must also supply an official translation. See the 'Foreign language documents' section in the Using an interpreter or translator page to find out how to get your licence officially translated.
